As a 6th-year PhD candidate in Biological Anthropology at Northwestern University, I examine the intersection of early-life adversity, neurodevelopment, and evolutionary theory, using neuroimaging and behavioral methods to understand how ecological experiences become biologically embedded across development. My dissertation investigates how harsh and unpredictable environments shape children’s cognitive and neurophysiological development through the framework of stress-adapted cognition, asking whether early adversity calibrates executive function in ways that reflect adaptive developmental plasticity rather than solely deficit or dysfunction. Additionally, a central goal of my research is expanding the role and accessibility of neuroscience within biological anthropology, including validating electroencephalography (EEG) as a non-invasive proxy for human brain energetics and adapting EEG into a field-friendly method for studying brain function across diverse ecological and community settings. Through collaborative work on the neuro-immune hypothesis with researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I also examine how chronic stress and neighborhood environments influence inflammation and neural processing, integrating psychophysiology, immunology, and neuroscience to understand pathways linking lived experiences with long-term health. Finally, I am equally committed to advancing community-engaged research frameworks and methods in human biology to make neurobiological research more accessible, relevant, and responsive to the communities involved. Together, these lines of research aim to bridge ecological, neurobiological, and community-level approaches to better understand human developmental plasticity and biological variation.
